Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains is the charming and quirky town of Katoomba. Known for its vast sprawling hills and breathtaking views, Katoomba has become a popular base for travellers exploring the surrounding mountain region.

The town itself is the most visited in the Blue Mountains, and it’s not hard to see why. Home to a famous scenic railway, incredible lookouts and many cafés and restaurants to keep even the foodies happy. Katoomba carries the relaxed appeal only reserved for the small towns surrounded by nature.

Be welcomed warmly by friendly locals, visit art galleries, and stroll along the main street before venturing into the mountains.

Getting to Katoomba from Sydney

The easiest way to reach the town is with a car, as it is only an hour and a half drive from Sydney’s foreshore. You will drive directly west from the city before venturing through the Blue Mountains to reach Katoomba. If you are visiting without a car, several tours can take care of the transport for you with experienced drivers and guides.

6 things to do in Katoomba

  • 1. Blue Mountains Hike

The Blue Mountains are a playground for those who love to experience the great outdoors. Choose from many hiking trails that suit all fitness levels and explore waterfalls and lookouts with epic views.

You will find ancient Aboriginal rock art on your journey and take in the impressive cliffs and expansive bushland. Home to The Three Sisters rock formations, sandstone ridges, bushwalks and plenty of wildlife, you will never run out of walking or cycling trails or fantastic photo ops here.

  • 2. Scenic World

A family and crowd favourite, Scenic World is a must-visit for any trip to the Blue Mountains. The 3 rides on offer will have you soaring over treetops, walking through bushland on immersive boardwalks, and taking in panoramic views of the region from several lookout points.

The steepest railway is found at Scenic World, and for the thrill-seekers out there, you can watch the sun go down over Jamison Valley from the Skyway rooftop. Talk about an unforgettable experience.

  • 3. Katoomba Falls

A simple 2km circuit will take you to the segmented Katoomba Waterfalls. Begin your walk at Scenic World and stroll through rainforest before reaching the falls, via the Round Walk trail.

  • 4. Everglades House & Gardens

Just outside of Katoomba is the Everglades House & Gardens. Found in neighbouring town Leura, the heritage-listed gardens are a former residence turned charming public garden. Stroll through the European designed landscape and winding paths and breathe in the fragrance of the blooming florals. A perfect place for an afternoon picnic.

  • 5. Visit Wentworth Falls

8km east of Katoomba is Wentworth Falls. A favourite route for bushwalking, a slightly challenging walk will be rewarded with sweeping views from Fletchers Lookout. Gaze at the impressive Wentworth Falls as the waters plunge 100m into the valley.

  • 6. Jenolan Caves

The largest, oldest, and arguably most impressive caves in Australia. Join a cave tour and be guided through the impressive underground formations.
