The Three Sisters is one of the main and iconic attractions in the Blue Mountains. These three sandstones are special and important to the Gundangurra, Wiradjuri, Tharawal, and Darug nations, who are the traditional owners. The Three Sisters are also special as it brings so many travellers to the Blue Mountains.

What is the Three Sisters’ Dreaming Story?

There are several Three Sisters Dreaming Stories and each one is slightly different.

The Three Sisters each have their own name, Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo and they were part of the Katoomba tribe. The three sisters fell in love with three boys (who are brothers) from the Nepean tribe.

Because of tribal laws, the brothers couldn’t marry the three sisters which upset the boys causing them to try to capture the three sisters. Because of the brother’s decision started a battle between the tribes.

To stop the brothers from capturing the sisters, a Katoomba elder placed a spell on the three sisters. This spell turned the sisters into three sandstones.

How were the Three Sisters formed?

Over 300 million years ago there had cliffs around Jamison Valley. These cliffs were eroding from the wind, rain, and rivers. Then 100 million years later (200 million years ago), three massive sandstones formed, which we call the Three Sisters today.
